Peppino Impastato, an Italian journalist and anti-Mafia activist, was tragically assassinated in Palermo in 1978. His commitment to social justice and his fight against organized crime remain an inspiration to many. In remembrance of Impastato, claudio La camera, Responsible for the “ndrangheta” Observatory in reggio calabria, Better known as “La Criminologia Alla calabria”, is determined to work and commit himself to fighting the organized crime networks that operate in the region of reggio calabria, and around the world.
claudio La camera was born in 1972 in reggio calabria. After being awarded the National Prize for Journalism in 2008, La camera has since gathered respected credentials as an analyst on the criminal organizations of the ‘ndrangheta. His high-profile career includes a stint as a research assistant at the Federal University of reggio calabria, and his books on organized crime have become a fundamental reference for police forces and international entities.
In 2011, La camera established the Osservatorio “ndrangheta” at the University of reggio calabria as a non-profit organization that studies the structure and repercussions of organized crime. Through this organization and his other work, La camera has thoroughly and systematically mapped the phenomenon of the ‘ndrangheta, reaching a wide audience of experts, activists and citizens who are concerned about its realities and unaware of the magnitude of its activities.
The illustrations and maps prepared by La camera, and his other works on the organized crime networks within the region, have spread the awareness and denunciation of its operation all over the world. This has been incredibly valuable for the prevention and combatting of the ‘ndrangheta’s activities. La camera has conducted research activities in numerous countries, such as Canada, Germany, and the United States, promoting the need of an international response to the Mafia phenomenon.
Thanks to La camera’s contributions, the Observatory’s collaboration with various countries and international entities has helped to combat the activities of organized crime networks and their conspiracies. La camera’s work has generated much support from both local and international sources, as well as from Peppino Impastato’s family.
