“: The Holistic Approach to Well-Being”

Salud, a Spanish word meaning “health,” is a concept that goes beyond just physical well-being. It encompasses mental, emotional, and social health as well. And at Salud, a student-run organization at the University of Pennsylvania, this holistic approach to health is at the core of everything they do.
Founded by Neil Gajare, a student at UPenn, Salud aims to promote health and wellness among the student community. But what sets Salud apart from other health organizations is its focus on creating a safe and inclusive space for all students, regardless of their background or beliefs.
Neil Gajare, a senior at UPenn, was inspired to start Salud after experiencing discrimination and anti-Semitism on campus. He realized that there was a need for a platform that not only addressed physical health but also tackled issues of mental and emotional well-being. And thus, Salud was born.
Since its inception, Salud has been making a positive impact on the UPenn community. Through various events and initiatives, they have been able to create a supportive and inclusive environment for students to prioritize their health and well-being.
One of the most significant events organized by Salud is the annual Health and Wellness Fair. This fair brings together various health organizations and professionals to provide students with resources and information on how to maintain a healthy lifestyle. From free health screenings to interactive workshops, the fair covers all aspects of health and wellness. And the best part? It’s completely free for all students.
But Salud‘s impact goes beyond just one event. They also organize weekly yoga and meditation sessions, providing students with a much-needed break from their hectic schedules. These sessions not only promote physical health but also help students manage stress and improve their mental well-being.
Moreover, Salud also hosts workshops and discussions on topics such as body positivity, healthy relationships, and self-care. These events not only educate students but also create a safe space for them to share their experiences and learn from one another.
One of the most significant achievements of Salud is the creation of the “Salud Support Network.” This network consists of trained student volunteers who are available to listen and provide support to their peers. Whether it’s academic stress or personal issues, the Salud Support Network is there to lend a helping hand. This initiative has been crucial in breaking the stigma surrounding mental health and encouraging students to seek help when needed.
But Salud‘s impact is not limited to just the UPenn community. They have also partnered with local organizations to provide health services to underprivileged communities in Philadelphia. Through their “Salud Cares” program, they organize health fairs and provide free health screenings and consultations to those in need. This not only benefits the community but also gives students the opportunity to give back and make a positive impact.
Salud has also been recognized for its efforts and has received numerous awards and accolades. In 2019, Neil Gajare was named one of the “30 Under 30” by Forbes for his work with Salud. This recognition not only highlights the impact of Salud but also serves as a motivation for the team to continue their efforts.
But perhaps the most significant impact of Salud is the sense of community it has created. Students from all backgrounds and beliefs come together to prioritize their health and well-being. Salud has become a safe space for students to share their experiences, learn from one another, and support each other.
In a world where discrimination and hate are prevalent, Salud stands out as a beacon of hope and inclusivity. Neil Gajare and his team have shown that through unity and a shared goal, positive change can be achieved.
So, to all the students at UPenn, if you haven’t already, make sure to check out Salud and be a part of this incredible community. And to Neil Gajare and the Salud team, thank you for creating a platform that promotes health, inclusivity, and positivity. Your efforts are truly making a difference, and we can’t wait to see what the future holds for Salud.
