Rosso di Montalcino wants to emerge from the shadow of Brunello. And he wants to do it on the strength of sales growing by 20% in 2022. Results achieved, among other things, in a year that has not been lucky for Italian DOC red wines. Rosso di Montalcino, on the other hand, experienced an exploit of domestic demand and recorded excellent performances abroad ranging from +50% in France to +40% in the USA (firmly the first market), up to excellent performances in Sweden, Switzerland, Germany. This is supported by the Consortium of Brunello di Montalcino wine itself (and which also protects the Rosso) a few days before Red Montalcino, the public event dedicated to the Doc in the Ilcinese Fortress scheduled for July 15th. Second the elaborations of the Price Observatory, thegrowth trend of Rosso di Montalcino stood at +19% in value last year, thanks to a further increase in the average price (+9%), which rose in 2022 well beyond the surplus of production costs. «Rosso di Montalcino has passed its evolutionary age and is now at a turning point – said the president of the Consortium, Fabrizio Bindocci –. The product is well positioned in the premium segment and comes from two years of important results: the average price increases (+13% over the two-year period), the horeca demand responds very well both in Italy and abroad, direct sales are on the rise . The task of the Consortium is now to support its growth without losing sight of the balance of the denomination and for this reason we have started discussions with the members to define the next addressing strategies”.
