However, Lord Ganesha, who had a voracious appetite, ended up eating all the food that was meant for the feast. This made Chandra angry, and he cursed Lord Ganesha, saying that whoever looks at him on the Chaturthi day will have to face obstacles and sufferings in life.
Distressed by this curse, Lord Ganesha sought the help of Lord Shiva, who advised him to observe a fast and worship Chandra on the Chaturthi day of every month. Following Lord Shiva’s advice, Lord Ganesha observed the fast and worshipped Chandra, who was pleased and lifted the curse. Since then, it is believed that observing a fast and worshipping Lord Ganesha and Chandra on Sankashti Chaturthi can bring prosperity, success, and happiness in life.

Sankashti Chaturthi is a grand celebration in many parts of India, especially in Maharashtra, where it is observed with great devotion and fervor. The preparations for this festival begin a day before, with people cleaning and decorating their homes and setting up a puja altar for the worship of Lord Ganesha. On the day of Sankashti Chaturthi, devotees wake up early in the morning, take a holy bath, and wear new clothes.
The main ritual of this festival is the fast, which is observed from sunrise to moonrise. Devotees abstain from eating food and consuming water during this period and break their fast only after performing the puja and offering prayers to Lord Ganesha. The puja begins with the worship of Lord Ganesha’s idol, which is adorned with flowers, garlands, and sweets.
