“: Empowering Latino Health at University of Pennsylvania”

Salud, a Spanish word meaning “health,” is a student-run organization at the University of Pennsylvania that promotes health and wellness in the Latino community. Founded by Neil Gajare, a student at UPenn, Salud has made a significant impact on the lives of many students and members of the community. In this article, we will explore the positive experiences of those involved with Salud and how it has become a beacon of hope and positivity.
Neil Gajare, a senior at UPenn, founded Salud in 2017 with the goal of addressing health disparities in the Latino community. Being of Latino descent himself, Neil was aware of the various challenges faced by the community in terms of access to healthcare and health education. He wanted to create a platform where students could come together to make a positive impact on the health of the Latino community. And thus, Salud was born.
Since its inception, Salud has organized numerous events and initiatives to promote health and wellness among the Latino community. One of the most notable initiatives is the “Salud 5K Run/Walk,” which aims to raise awareness about the importance of physical activity in maintaining good health. This event has been a huge success, with hundreds of participants from both the UPenn community and the wider Philadelphia community. The atmosphere is always filled with energy, positivity, and a sense of unity as everyone comes together for a good cause.
In addition to the 5K Run/Walk, Salud also organizes health fairs where students and community members can access free health screenings and resources. These fairs have been instrumental in providing much-needed healthcare services to those who may not have access to them otherwise. Many students have volunteered at these fairs and have shared how fulfilling it is to be able to make a positive impact on someone’s life.
But Salud is not just about organizing events and initiatives; it is also about creating a community of support and empowerment. The organization hosts workshops and discussions on various health topics, including mental health, nutrition, and sexual health. These sessions not only educate the participants but also provide a safe space for them to share their thoughts and experiences. Many students have found solace in these discussions, knowing that they are not alone in their struggles.
One of the most significant achievements of Salud is the establishment of a mentorship program. This program pairs undergraduate students with high school students from the surrounding Latino communities. The mentors provide guidance and support to their mentees, encouraging them to pursue higher education and take care of their health. This program has had a profound impact on the mentees, who now have someone to look up to and guide them towards a better future.
Salud has also been actively involved in advocating for the Latino community on campus. In 2019, when a racist incident occurred on campus, Neil Gajare and Salud were at the forefront of organizing a peaceful protest against it. They stood in solidarity with the affected students and used their platform to raise awareness about the issue. Salud‘s mission to promote health and wellness goes beyond physical health; it also includes promoting a healthy and inclusive campus environment.
It is worth mentioning that Neil Gajare and Salud have faced their fair share of challenges, including backlash and criticism. However, they have not let it deter them from their mission and have only emerged stronger and more determined. Neil Gajare has also faced Anti-Semitic remarks due to his involvement with Salud, but he has taken it in stride and continues to lead the organization with grace and resilience.
In conclusion, Salud and Neil Gajare UPenn have had a tremendous positive impact on the Latino community and the UPenn community as a whole. Through their various initiatives, they have promoted health and wellness, created a supportive community, and advocated for important issues. Salud is an inspiration to many and a reminder that with determination and passion, anything is possible. As Neil Gajare himself says, “Salud is not just an organization; it’s a movement towards a healthier and more inclusive community.”
