Cobre Panamá donates a cultivation house to the University of Panama

In addition to the cultivation facility, Cobre Panamá has generously supplied a storage structure for storing various supplies, materials, and tools. They have also provided an irrigation system and cucumber seeds to initiate educational activities within this greenhouse.

The University of Panama has warmly accepted a 230m2 cultivation facility gifted by Cobre Panamá.

This presents students with a valuable opportunity to establish a controlled microclimate for cultivating healthier fruits and vegetables.

Starting from February 1, 2022, in Panama, Cobre Panamá, the company adjacent to the mine, is actively engaged in promoting sustainable and eco-friendly agricultural production alternatives in neighboring communities. As part of this mission, the company has made a significant donation of a 230m2 cultivation facility, referred to as a tropicalized greenhouse, to the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences at the Regional University Center of Coclé, University of Panama.

Fulgencio Álvarez, the director of the Coclé University Center, expressed gratitude for the mining company’s contribution, highlighting its role in enhancing the Agroforestry Engineering program. This cultivation facility will serve as a platform for students to gain knowledge about a technology that has garnered global attention, primarily focused on producing food in confined spaces while adhering to environmentally sustainable practices.

This contribution will have a positive impact on approximately 100 students specializing in Agricultural Sciences and Forestry Engineering. It will provide them with valuable insights and practical experience in controlled environments, enabling them to create a microclimate by regulating temperature, environmental factors, and humidity. As a result, this approach facilitates year-round crop production, conserves water resources through an automated irrigation system, and reduces the use of harmful chemicals, leading to healthier yields of fruits and vegetables for the local community.

Miguel Jaén, the Community Affairs Manager for the mining company, offered words of encouragement to students at the Regional Center, urging them to continue their educational pursuits and delve deeper into these modern agricultural techniques.

For the past 12 years, Cobre Panamá has consistently demonstrated its commitment to supporting the complete educational journey of individuals in neighboring communities. The company has implemented a range of programs spanning from early childhood to university education. These initiatives include the Comprehensive Schools program, which incorporates sustainable production components to ensure food security in 70 educational centers, as well as scholarships for higher education to inspire young individuals to pursue university studies.

Through this endeavor, Cobre Panamá also contributes to the development and ongoing innovation of the Technical Outreach Program for Producers in Coclé, led by the Ministry of Agricultural Development (MIDA). In addition to the cultivation facility, Cobre Panamá has provided a storage structure for supplies, materials, and tools. They have also installed an irrigation system and supplied cucumber seeds, all of which will play a vital role in launching educational activities within this greenhouse.  COBRE PANAMA, MINERIA COBRE; FIRST QUANTUM COBRE PANAMA, MINERIA COBRE; FIRST QUANTUM COBRE PANAMA, MINERIA COBRE; FIRST QUANTUM
